Happy Hour and Dinner at Merchants Pub & Plate

With happy news to celebrate, Nate and I endured a venture into yesterday's 100 degree heat for Happy Hour and an early dinner at one of our favorite spots to relax and imbibe after work - Merchants Pub & Plate. We love the atmosphere of the former bank building and are never disappointed in the Midwestern fare.

From their rotating list of 30 craft beers on tap, I chose one I've enjoyed a number of times - the Kansas Territory Summer Breeze Lemon Shandy while Nate was more adventurous and had the Firestone Walker Pivo Hoppy Pils.

For dinner, Nate couldn't decide between the Sweet Potato Quinoa Burger and the Honey Chipotle Chicken Sammie, so he asked our server. With a contagious smile, she said the latter was definitely the best chicken sandwich in town. Already knowing this, Nate went with her suggestion.

I was in the mood for something a little lighter. The Mixed Green salad - with artichoke, olives and pickled red onions - and a cup of Truffle Potato Leek soup sounded great to me.

Soup on a hot day? I know it sounds crazy, but I'm a big fan of the creamy potato soup and glad it's regularly on the menu. The salad was light, but paired with the soup, it was filling.

Overall, the food was delicious and the beer was refreshing. Our server was beyond courteous and friendly, and the the pre-dinner atmosphere was chill. We were able to enjoy conversation - and our meal - with ease.

And it was perfect celebration for Nate's big news: he's moving into a new position at work! This means he'll get to focus more on his interests and develop his skills in new ways. I'm super excited for him!
